Dutch langage

UTM – Uderground Train Movement is a Belgian collective that groups some talented photographers. Their work is similar to the one you can discover through this website. The langage may be an issue but Photography is an universal langage and you will easily access to the pictures.

This is a great place to get inspiration, especially if you want some ideas on the way to use wide angle lenses with creativity or to insert humanity on your images. A great website to discover!

The UTM members describe themselve : “Undergound Train Movement is a close group of friends who want to show their creative pictures from the railway scene, not just trains. We go undergound becose we don’t want to have name and fame, we just want to show our pictures based on the undergound scene. Its our goal to do so further in the future with a new website and our own magazine… We would like to inspire other railroad photographers and throw away all those stupid rules about how to take a picture of a train!“

A personal vision is a source of inspiration to everyone, especially when it’s creative. Then it’s our job to add our personal sensitivity, our “touch”. “New Horizons” is a section that helps you to find such personal visions to help you to improve your work. David Hyman’s website is one of this creative vision on Railroad Photography, a gold mine filled with shining nuggets.

David has two talents. First, he is a great photographer and writer. He explores any kind of medium to express himself. His recent work are slideshows … on a PDF file! He also writes very good photo-essays (like this one about the Fascination of Trains or this other one about MoW people, the Unsung Heroes).

David’s other talent was to realize the “World Class Photography” section, a meeting of talented photographers from all around the world. Just imagine: John Fasulo, Ronni Kappel, Misko Kranjec, Scott Lothes, Kevin Scanlon… And the list is not complete! This section has dozens of golden nuggets. Be ready to be surprised, to be amazed or chocked. This is THE place to go to find inspiration and ideas, to stay in contact with contemporary Railroad Photography Creativity.

You probably don’t know Misko Kranjec‘s work. He is one of Europe most talented and creative photographer. In 2006, he won the famous Center for Railroad Photography award with Scott Lothes.

Misko is a Slovenian photojournalist. Most of his work is about human beings. The link we share with you here will drive you to a brand new world : Misko’s galleries. Around 30 of them will show how contemporary and creative is Misko’s look on the Railway World. Look closely to the eyes of the people on the pictures. It will show you the deep trust between them and the photographer.

We suggest you to discover one gallery : the first 2010 snow in the Ljubljana station (Slovenia). You can see the work of a talented photojournalist: Misko found looks, attitudes,… This is a great photo-essay and we have to look at it closely. This will give us precious clues for our future works.

China was the last place on earth to watch steam action on a big scale. This book is the result of the work from three friends. They went in many Chinese remote areas and brought back some amazing pictures. To do this, they used some middle-format cameras and fuji films. Then they scanned the slides to post-process some of them. This is an interesting mix betwell digital and film.

This gives a wonderful book. Even you’re not crazy about steam, you will like atmospheres, colours and landscapes. Everyday life in small communities is well shown, as the importance of the railroad in their life. This book is very inspiring and its price is not expensive, so why don’t you but it now?

Scott Lothes’ name is well known for anyone who read Trains or who knows the Center for Railroad Photography and Art. He also shared some of his pictures on the fist issue of the PDF magazine.

This is THE book to have! You’ll discover some great black and white pictures from Richard Steinheimer. He worked in Western America (Milwaukee Road, Southern Pacific) with any kind of weather (even rain). This last point is really important as many railfans consider that only sun rules. And through Steinheimer’s eyes, results are stunning. A small english text introduces the reader to the history of the North-American Railroad Photography. It is easy to read and very well made. Non-english readers have to note that they can enjoy this book as most of it is about the pictures.

Steinheimer gives us various themes to work on : depots, night scenes, wilderness areas, rainy weather … everything you need if you’re feeling that your inspiration is going away!

Author : Ted Benson ; Ed : The Boston Mills Press – 2000 ; ISBN 1-55046-273-3 ; Language : English ; 176 pages

“Railroad Photo-Essays for dummies” could have been another title to this book! With twelve black and white photo-essays, Benson teaches us basics of this art. Every essay is made of a synthetic text followed by pictures and their captions. English grammar and vocabulary are very high and non-english readers will need a good dictionary to fully understand.

Benson’s pictures are differents than Steinheimer’s. Actually, the reader has to appreciate them as a composition with the text.
